True Stories

This week I have been joking that theology is “above my pay grade.” As a mere pastor, what right do I have to speak of holy mysteries? I experience them; I preside over them; but to speak of them seems like a dishonor to God, since God has not chosen to make himself explainable by a limited human being like me.

However, as we approach the Ascension as well as Pentecost and Trinity Sundays, the shape of the church year seems to demand more speaking of holy mysteries. And indeed the Bible reminds us of many things that God HAS chosen to reveal to us about himself. So if I stay within the evidence of the Bible when I preach theology, we should be safe. After all, these true stories are what the God of love has already deemed it necessary for us to know.

This Sunday, I am going to be telling a Christian story that is drawn from the evidence of the Bible, although it is not clearly written down in the Bible (which was also compiled by limited human beings like me). The purpose of such stories is to know the truth of how deeply we are loved by God.

True story.

with love, Pastor Chelsea
