Wasting Time
Luther taught that work is holy because all vocations are a calling from God. This is beautiful, but there’s more to life than work! This week I shirked work to attend a birthday party, where a live band wooed me with the song “Waste” by Phish. It’s a beautiful song; check it out here.
In this song, the singer rejects the main career occupations of the world and counsels his listeners to live a carefree life. But then the chorus takes it a step further, saying “Come waste your time with me.” It’s actually a love song, imploring us to spend time with the people we love.
Our gospel theme this Sunday is work, and how we choose to spend our lives. If you need a giggle at work this week, I recommend checking out the addictive short films on Youtube starring the rodent Scrat or the snowman Olaf.
Both Scrat and Olaf are hilariously accident-prone, but Scrat is famous for his panicked screams while Olaf is known for his trademark giggle. Why do they react so differently? The difference between them is that while Scrat is obsessed with work, Olaf gets lost in play. How would you rather waste your time?
with love, Pr. Chelsea
